The Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini open wikipedia on the title
Benvenuto Cellini open wikipedia on the author (1500 - 1571)
This is one of the most colorful and fascinating autobiographies and what a wild, wild ride it is. Benvenuto Cellini the untameable goldsmith, sculptor, musician, artilleryman, sharpshooter, wheedler, and brute gives us the story of his life in his own words. Although esteemed for his art, when push came to shove he could as effectively dispatch an enemy with his words as with his sword. Cellini lived as the Italian renaissance was peaking where he was able to create masterpieces for his patrons - kings, popes, and leaders of sometimes waring Italian city-states.

BLACK & WHITE open wikipedia on the title
Lewis Shiner open wikipedia on the author ( - ) http://www.lewisshiner.com

The first Fiction Liberation Front Creative Commons licensed novel.

"Lewis Shiner's latest, Black & White, is killer. Strong characters, suspenseful situations, and tremendous insight. A novel that doesn't flinch from social issues, and is so gracefully written it makes you want to weep. Should not be missed. Lewis Shiner is the real deal, and this is his finest work."

Rifters I: Starfish open wikipedia on the title
Peter Watts open wikipedia on the author ( - ) http://www.rifters.com

"No one has taken this premise to such pitiless lengths - and depths - as Watts ... In a claustrophobic setting enlivened by periodic flashes of beauty and terror, the crew of Beebe Station come across as not only believable but likeable as they fight for equilibrium against their own demons, one another, their superiors and their remorselessly hostile surroundings."

- The New York Times (Notable Book of the Year)

"The story drives like a futuristic locomotive. It's a hypnotic read, somber and compelling. Best thing I've read in a long time. Peter Watts is an author to watch for."

Main Street open wikipedia on the title
Sinclair Lewis open wikipedia on the author (1885 - 1951)

Publishers Weekly #1 Best Seller for 1921.

Sinclair Lewis is the first American to receive a Nobel Price for literature. Main Street was initially awarded the 1921 Pulitzer Price, but the Board of Trustees overturned the jury decision and awarded the prize to Edith Wharton for Age of Innocence.

The novel is an indictment of the 'vacuous respectability' of small town America and an exploration of the conflict between those who strive for intensity and those who are content with a routine existence. Lewis's characters are skillfully drawn and he shows subtle and compelling insights into their psychology. In spite of it's critical stance the initial publication of the book was a political and and social event.
